New program to boost digital inclusion for refugees and new migrants

well it's estimated nearly one in four Australians a digitally excluded particularly recent migrants and refugees the new pilot program is aiming to change that some seven hundred thousand dollars is being provided to the good things Foundation to deliver the program assisting some 800 women who have recently arrived in the country to boost their digital skills joining us now is Miriam's ahead from Afghan women on the
Move who knows firsthand the power of digital skills for the migrant Community Miriam really appreciate you making the time thank you firstly just at the scene for us here just tell us in terms of where these women are coming from what is life like now under the Taliban for women still on the ground in Afghanistan thank you actually to um for having me in your program
and well what's happening in Afghanistan things gone from bad to worse still the women are deprived from going to school and participate in Social and work activities so I I cannot give you any more updates but to say that things are just worse in Afghanistan and and women are suffering women and children or suffering the most at the moment and so for women who escape and
start to set up new lives and I know you're working with a lot of people in that situation just tell us about some of the key challenges that they're facing when they're trying to do that and and why this digital exclusion issue is such a big problem uh well for those of us that were lucky to come in Australia and for those of us that have
been here for a long time now the the digital world that are going so fast uh the program will help them so much to connect to begin with and and to be able to connect they have to be equipped they have to be given the the right information and their confidence to be able to use those tools to be able to do what they need to
do for them to be inspired to what social media and digital work can offer them in this program that it will be implementing implementing in the from next month I I'm confident in the work that I have been doing with Multicultural Community especially women that have lots of challenges and of their language barrier their their confidence their cultural and other aspects of their life that they
they feel isolated with the writer programs and tailor programs for particular communities that are targeted under this pilot will benefit everybody and then we're all going to get that tangible result that we wanted to see so more broadly how is that humanitarian program to bring Afghan Nationals to Australia progressing I think it was over 30 000 places being offered to Afghan Nationals are we seeing those
places being filled is that process happening as smoothly as it could be do you think yeah the process are going all right but as you go as everybody knows the immigration policies in Australia is quite difficult and we're still advocating and so we are in conversation about how to really get help sooner than later for those who are in need of to be rescued but we
are working on that but most importantly my focus at the moment is also for the women and families that are arrived here and other Multicultural communities that we want them to be able to equip themselves with the resources that are available through such projects that we just were talking about and other resources that are available from from all levels of government and communities to be able
to get them uh that this is your right this is information you need this is how you get things done for you guys to be able to help yourself and then people that need help in uh in countries like Afghanistan so we are we are kind of looking at both sides of the world to see how can our programs and our voice help them
