Show #482: The Starting Rotation Endures An Eventf

heal up. Before the end of the regular season. Jesus. Hey, but when he pitches, we mash. Yeah, that's true. And we have to. Yep. All right, folks. And tonight's show will discuss lots of changes coming in the starting rotation. The new, um, the 29 run massacre. And we will talk about some unsung heroes. But first, a quick break. All right. So guys, lots of starting pitching

news this week. Before we get to like the announcements and some, you know, the changes in the schedule, I want to talk about Ian Anderson, who got his change up and his curve back in, you know, like that first game form. And through a masterpiece Saturday night, seven innings, one hit, no runs, three walks, which all occurred in the first two innings, nine strikeouts. And with

the performance Saturday night, he gets his name in the record books for a few things. Both sort of related, but really interesting. I thought he becomes the second pitcher over the last 120 years to allow one hit or less in two starts of at least six innings in his first four appearances. He's also the first pitcher in major league history to have multiple games of six

plus innings pitched, six plus strikeouts while giving up less than two hits in his first four starts. So guys look, Anderson could flop in the playoffs. Like there's no guarantees here, but it certainly seems more and more certain that like he's got it. And he's, he really belongs in the majors and he will be atop the braze rotation with Friedens Seroka for a long time. And,

you know, that that in and of itself is exciting. You hope so. I mean, you, it was like you said, it was, you know, he struggled against the Marlins and then just came back and bounced back. And the thing that was so great, the thing that I love so much is that, you know, against the Marlins, he, he, uh, he had that throwing error and he

sort of unraveled, right? In that game and he struggled in that game. And then to come back and then the second inning, like you said, he was not great. He wasn't super sharp. And he had those two walks in the second inning against the Nats, right? And then he sort of buckled down and and then looked amazing. So he, um, didn't, you know, there's a mental

part of the game and we've seen it unravel full tea more than once, right? And, and, and to know that he's sort of control that and, and, and keep things under control when we needed that when we, we needed him to pitch like that was great. And, um, the other thing is that his stuff is fantastic. Like the, the, the mix of the change up in

the curve that he was throwing on a Saturday night was ace stuff. I know that people say he doesn't have an ace fastball. But if he can, if he can locate with his off-speed pitches, who cares about his fastball? I mean, he can, you know, he's got a decent fastball. Um, he's got, he's got great stuff and just the mental stuff. Also, it's really great. Which

looked like he had from day one, right? And you're right, Ham. He is faced adversity. That Labor Day game was not good. Those two walks out in the night were not good. But he recovered from both those things. And yeah, what looks like that's strong mental makeup really only looks stronger and stronger as we keep seeing him. And the change up is devastating. Yeah. It is

a weapon. Well, I mean, it's like Maddox, the way that he just seems like he can control his speed like Maddox could, you know, just like, oh, 85, 86 is up and out of Max. I always said, you know, two or three miles per hour difference can just really freeze people. Um, because they're so locked in and he just, I mean, it seems sort of effortless.

He was in the zone after the second inning. It was beautiful to watch. He looked more on the field stuff. Kyle Wright, you know, he, he gave up three earned four total. Two of them were real cheapies. This is Sunday's game today. But Kyle Wright looked like he really did take a step forward today more so than any other point in the season. And look much

less guaranteed there compared to Ian Anderson, but it was a very encouraging start from Kyle Wright today. More so than I think anything we've seen from him. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, the thing about Anderson, it's like, you know, they, we've talked to it a million times, the cliche of like 10 pictures to get one. I mean, if, I know, I've complained a lot about

the pitching staff and kind of where they've been able to develop these guys. But I mean, if all this filters out where you end up with Soroka, freed and, you know, if Ian Anderson projects out this way, that's, that's quite a trio. Yeah. Three top of the world. Pull out of the sky. I have the interesting things that first stat that you threw out Steve, the

one about the last 120 years, you know, in your mind, you're like, Oh, I wonder who it was. Is was it like Sai Young or Babe Ruth or Dwight Gooden or somebody that was so amazing when they first came up. No, it was Marvin Freeman. I know. Is that right? It was Marvin Freeman. Yes. So hopefully his career does not project out as Marvin Freeman's day.

He's like a mop up guy in the, in the bullpen. But it was pretty amazing to see one of my favorite all time braves. Marvin Freeman's name pop up. That is so funny. As part of the show today. So yeah, and you hope that you hope to call right. Obviously, I mean, we saw all this once before when he had that, I guess it was the

second start that he had that we got excited about. And we thought he had sort of taken a step. But, you know, at the end of this next week with handles potentially pitching, hopefully, freed coming back. You know, if you can just sort of with this offense, that's yeah, just some, just some continuity with the, with the starting rotation. And if you can get anything out

of handles, if freed comes back the way he was, you know, right starts become. Ising on the cake at that point. So, so we come up. So let's, yeah, let's talk about how the week is is shaping this coming week is shaping up based on what happened this week that just ended. So to start this week, right, we talked about. Max freed and his really his

worst in terms, you know, by earned runs and certainly by fastball velocity, his worst start of the year last Saturday in his less than like super encouraging post game quotes after the game. So to start this week. Fried was placed on the I L with muscle spasm in his lumbar spine, which was a dreadful way to start the week. You know, it's a little unclear. Right.

I mean, he clearly was getting tired. Hopefully the muscle spasms were really what was behind. His velocity. And I think they said, look, we can, you know, we can put him on the I L, make it retroactive. And get some rest. You know, he basically misses one start and he gets some rest. And hopefully we take care of this. And, you know, fingers crossed, right. Like

Kurt said, he's been announced for this coming Friday against the mets. But yeah, hate it, you know, freed on the I L was like the last thing we needed to see. He feels fragile a little bit. It's going to concern me. Right. I mean, he's just didn't he have blister issues and. Yeah, but he does seem past those. No, I know, but there's just. I don't

know. Yeah. If look, if it's fatigue. Yeah, it's not been that long a season. Now you can do the math and say because he's been carrying the entire rotation that it's it's almost more mental than anything. And that has worn him down physically. And maybe that's the deal. And with guys coming back this week. Maybe that takes some of the pressure off. But yeah, let's hope

that this is really one takes care of what the physical ailment is. And takes care of the rest of it as well. Yeah. All right. So after his one and two thirds innings pitched five earned run performance in the first game of the national series, Robbie Erlin was DFA. And the last game that he played. Seems like we waited a long time for that. And the

corresponding move was we're calling Sean Newcombe from the satellite team. We'll discuss Newcombe's role a little bit later. So that is one piece of the overly conservative approach to starting pitching sort of off the table now. So no more Robbie Erlin. In that same vein, following his three and a third innings eight earned run performance. That was, of course, the 29 runs. And you know, steak

two and 11 to lead Tommy Malone was placed on the I L with elbow inflammation with crapiness. Yeah, exactly. Look, he's given up 16 earned runs in the nine and two thirds innings he is pitched for the braves. Do you guys think we see him again? We scored 740 runs when he pitches. Give it take a couple give it or take a couple of national league

records. Yeah, I don't either. I think they're like, see you man. Yeah, an easy way to remember his ERA is when Columbus sailed the ocean blue. His ERA is 1490. I think it depends on what we get out of handles and free this coming week. And obviously, right has now earned another start again. So I doubt it. Yeah, which goes to even more that. Infobulous did

not. Nothing except make one move and that move was a complete disaster. Complete soft move. He like limped. Well, yeah, no, it was male. And had he been a, can we say soft move on a family show? I think we said a couple of things we probably shouldn't say. It's all him. It's not me. Yeah, he really is not repeating. So blue, man. Yeah, the guy

that should have been the fourth or fifth starter has, you know, it has the stuff of like the ninth starter. Right. Really bad. Yeah, they really should run a nine man rotation. I mean, I would rather have a thought of that. I would have, and Culperson is the eighth starter. I would rather have Culperson pitch than alone at this point. All right. I miss Culperson. You

miss him already. I do. I miss him already because we saw him so much this year. Well, the team is just less handsome because that. And seems impossible. All right. So more moves coming. So Tuky Tuky to saw returns to the starting rotation. He starts Monday and Baltimore. Kurt, as you alluded to, Hamils has been announced as the starter on Wednesday. He will build up his

major league innings by pitching in the major leagues. No starter has been announced for Tuesday's game. So ham, with all these moves. What do you think the five starters are the rest of the year? And I think part of that answer. Is who starts on Tuesday? I mean, I think there's two weeks. The brave. Yeah. 13 games. Yeah. So the Braves are hoping that they can

probably lock up some sort of freed Anderson. Hamils. Right. Tuky. I mean, that's what they want. Right. Tom. I mean, Tom, I mean, Tom, and Tuky are maybe it. And I think, you know, they're going to see if Tuky can. Catch fire here. That's what I think they're going for. So is that the first question? I guess the second question is. Yeah. I mean, I think

I think that is the end. You know, ESPN doesn't think Tomlin is pitching this coming week. Tuesday's interesting. Right. They called up Nukem. And I think part of it was, you know, the bullpen had just been so used. Um, early in the weekend, particularly with the, with the extra innings game that he was there for insurance. Right. So maybe he starts on Tuesday. And just see

if he catch lightning in a bottle. But I agree. I think Tomlin's out. I think. Yeah. I think they want to go Max Anderson. Hamils. Right. Tuky for the rest for the next two weeks. So then who starts Tuesday? A new one. Tuky. I think, I think it's a new one. I think it's a new one. I think it's a new one. I think it's a

new one. I think it's a new one. I think it's a new one. I think it's a new one. Probably. I thought it, or Bryce Wilson. Right. I mean, it could be Bryce Wilson. I wish it was Wilson. You did you know? Well, I mean, I feel like we know what we've seen in Nukem. I feel like I've known what we've seen in Bryce. No, I

know. But I feel like. I agree. I agree. Maybe the ceiling in my mind is higher for him as a starter. And you know, since we. I'd rather see Wilson than Nukem start on Tuesday. I just I thought I saw somebody said that Nukem was coming back to go in the bullpen. Yeah. What I would like. Do you be said for the bullpen? Bowman has said

it's not yet decided. So I don't know. So Ham of those let's call it six guys. Like could this all work out for the playoffs? So I think this goes back to what. Kurt was saying about the offense. I mean, the offense can make a lot of bad pitching look fine. Right. And and cover for a lot of horrible stuff. I mean, are yeah, and the

bullpen too. Right. Exactly. But our. We're going to have to win four series. Right. Four series against formidable lineups. Strong rotations. And I know that we. There's new players with Hamils. But we have, you know, right has been in the starting rotation. Two kids. We have. We have the 28th worst ERA and Major League baseball for starters. 25th and Endings pitched. We have. So basically we

have. We're the fifth most in walks. If you look at the stats for Major League pitching, if it's a bad stat, we're near the top. If it's a good stat, we're in the bottom five. I mean, our for starters for starters, we are horrible. And so I don't think. I mean, I don't think we're going to. This is all going to get settled down. We're going

to come into, you know, and then we're going to be the, you know, the 95 braves. And we've got smolt's Maddox and Glavin. Um, I think, I think we're thin. We're young. I don't think it's solved. From a pitching standpoint. But I, I mean, I, I think our offense and our bullpen can really make a bad starting pitching. Not matter. Well, look, super happy path. Right.

If Max comes back and he's the max of earlier this season. And Anderson is. To this good. And Hamilton's is good. You're threading a lot of needles here. But keep. No, absolutely. Oh my God. They have the thread so many needles. Right. And so young, so young. Except for. You know, those three guys. And then if, you know, some combination of right. I mean, right needs

to be at least as good as he was today. Right to be that fourth guy. But he's, I mean, which is a lot to ask. It's a lot. Oh, it's too much. Yeah, two and two rookie starting in the postseason. Yeah. I mean, with a four man rotation. Yeah. Right. I mean, if we get to like a lot. And I mean, you can't, you can't, you

can't spot regardless of what the, the offense does. You can't start a playoff game. This is not going to be the drags of the Innoes that we're facing. You know, as Hamilton said, you can't spot a team five runs in the first two innings. And then just have this expectation that the Braves are going to come back. I mean, it's great that they do. But we

saw. Last year against the Cardinals that, you know, you can't, you cannot. Game five aside. I mean, there were games where the game four where the Braves left a thousand men on base, just like they did in game two against the Nationals this weekend. And we're, you know, I mean, those things. The offense can turn out 29 runs in a game, which is fun. It's exciting.

But I mean, that's one win. You leave 22 guys on base the next game. You know, I mean, it's almost like a counter-access. So, yeah, I, it will, I mean, freed still is such an ace when he, hopefully he gets back and is, is ready to go. But I just worry. After that. I mean, that's a lot on the, any Anderson who's pitched what now four

starts. Yeah. Yeah. And Hamilton have, and Amos will have, two before the playoffs get here. And then right to key or young in an experience. And I mean, is there any chance? I know this is crazy. Any chance that Fulti is part of any conversation here. I mean, they keep talking about him throwing 95 and all this kind of stuff. I mean, Fulti is a thousand

percent going to start a game before the end of the regular season. Don't think, don't think half of it. There's any possibility that he can do something. Sure. They are so going to start Fulti one game. I have no idea when his, you know, last start on the satellite squad was or whatever. I imagine his start will be not this coming week, but then, you know,

the last week of the regular season. It's going to happen. Would they ever start him in a playoff game? Yeah. You think they would like what can be? I bet if he looks brilliant. I bet if he looks really good and he's really thrown 94 95 and snap and all. Yeah. Look, it's all so happy path. No, no, no. I mean, he'd be the fourth guy.

Yeah, yeah, he would be, I mean, it depends on how Hamill's looks, right? But yeah, he would be, yeah, he'd certainly be behind Max and Anderson and probably Hamill's. Yeah, yeah. Probably regardless of how Hamill's looks. Yeah. Yeah. So let's talk about that 29 game, the 29 run game for a minute. So it was Wednesday night in Atlanta, final game in the Marlin series and things

started poorly and predictably when Tommy Malone gave up two runs in the second inning. And then things go bonkers as the Braves proceed to score 29 runs. The rest of the game. So Curtis, what are some of your favorite stats or moments from that game? Well, obviously, the duval at night, nine RBI was just amazing to witness what he was doing. The Braves, I just lost

the set here, but 18 of their 29 runs came by home run, which was, which tied an MLB record for most runs, scored via homers in a game. You know, it was just up and down the line up. So many guys, Freeman getting his 1500 career head as a homeer in that game, Aussie coming back and having three hits in the game. When was this first

game back since his wrist injury, poor Jordan Yamamoto being left end to just be roasted alive. Giving up 12 run runs into thirds, which is the, he's the second reliever over the past 70 years to allow 12 run runs in an outing. So, yeah, it was just fun. And you, you know, I mean, it's amazing that they, they stopped scoring in the seventh run, the seventh

inning, like that, you know, 30 is the all time record. And they still had to, well, I guess one shot at it. They obviously didn't get to bat night. Well, they didn't see the game first. Seated. Yeah. This great six innings. Yeah. Yeah. So it was, yeah, it was crazy. It just never, I mean, it was like softball games I've been part of. So I saw

a couple other things about Duval, right? So not only is, you know, that he hit three homers again eight days later. From the, you know, the game in Boston. But he was, I don't know if you guys saw that he's the first brave ever to have two three homeer games, which is crazy. Because you think about the guys not in one season in a career. Yeah.

In a career. Chipper Andrew. Classco. I mean, I got Greg Luzinski. I mean, all the big hammering guys they had back in the 70s and 80s. Yeah. Darryl Johnson. I mean, another really cool thing I saw is it's the first 29 to nine score ever in baseball. And it's the first score that's never happened before in a baseball game in more than 20 years. That's amazing.

I love that one too. I love that the Kurt, you're one about the 18 and the braves 29 runs. Also, I love that for Duval. He hit for the cycle as home, the he hit for the homeer cycle. Right. So he's the only player ever to hit a two run home or a three run homeer in a grand slam in order in a game. Nine RBI's

too. That's awesome. And yeah. And the brewers had their third highest scoring game and the third highest margin of victory game in their franchise history. And they didn't even make the news. They threw a two hitter. This one 19 to nothing in the due through they threw two two hitter and take a back seat. Well, related to that because of that score. It was the first

time in the modern era that two teams won by 19 or more on the same day. It's crazy. And we left 17 on base. We left 17 runners on base while scoring 29 runs. And they wanted to they wanted to make the news for that as well. So they left 22 on the yes, exactly. All right. Okay. So let's move on to the topic of unsung

heroes, right? We spend a lot of time on the akunis and the Freddy's. The soon. We'll see you guys. We'll see you guys next time. Super stars and then on the other end of the spectrum, you know, ender. But with two weeks left in the regular season, let's make our picks. For the biggest unsung heroes on this year's team. Hammy, why don't you go first? All

right. I will go with Chris Martin in his first appearance this year. If you make a lot of cold play. Yes. Yes. Wow. First person to make that joke. Yeah. Really nice. We just sleep. I'm going to sneak that one in. Everyone else did. Right. So he gave up a homeward assessor in a 1-0 loss to the Met. I think the second game of the season.

And since it has not given up a run and has only given up three hits. He's walked one. He struck out 16 in 14 innings. So, you know, he hasn't got the number of innings or appearances as Shane Green or even Luke Jackson. The travesty of that. But since he's shut down. I mean, he's lights out 100% lights out since that first game. I would put

him in any situation. Yeah. No doubt. So I'll go with a similar guy. I'll go with Darren O'Day. Right. So including in Sunday's finale in DC O day has made 15 appearances. The last time similar to Martin. The last time in only time he's given up a run all season was his second appearance back on July 29th when he gave up one. Very nice 0.69 ERA.

An 0.85 whip. 18 strikeouts in 13 total innings. Like, you know, he's a bit of an afterthought. I think when we think about the amazing back end of the bullpen. But O day has been key. Oh, man, you need those. Yeah. Six seventh inning. And both. Anno day. Yeah. And mentor. I mean, you take a couple innings away. And those guys are all zeroes across the

board. Right. Certainly for Martin and O day. Yeah. Been amazing. Yeah. Curtis, who do you got? Well, we just talked about him quite a bit. But I don't think we really ever talk about Adam Duval on the show. And just a story of him going down, being demoted and basically spending the entire year in triple A last year. I know everybody knows it. But the fact

that the guys come back this year. And not just like contributed, but been vital to this team. I mean, he's got the third most home runs in Major League Baseball right now. And I think that's really great defense to the point where O's Zunek can basically be a D H. And, you know, it's just the middle of the lineup. It's just extraordinary. I mean, Sherzer was

talking about it today. And obviously with Acunia back with Ozzy now back. I mean, the depth all up and down this lineup is just insane. And it's because of guys. You know what you're getting with Freeman. You know what you're getting with Ozzy, of course, being back. I mean, he's looked amazing. With Acunia back. And I mean, adding what we weren't sure what we were getting

out of Azuna. We weren't sure what we were going to get out of Dan's V. And we sure so we're not expecting anything out of Adam Duval this year. And he has been simply amazing. Yeah. And what's really amazing is right. You know, they only wanted to use him. And rightfully so based on past years that he, you know, he really crushed lefties. But it became,

it just became he became a needed part of the lineup. And, you know, I was worried he was going to get exposed being an everyday player. But my God, his OPS against right handed starters is actually the 929 compared to an 848 against lefties. Yeah. Like his, you know, his batting average is a little less. But his OBP is higher, his sluggins higher. I mean, it's,

yeah, he's just, he's, he's become like this complete player for the team. It's just been amazing. Well, and he could go ahead. I was going to say just it's a contract question. Now do you bring him back as you were? Like now, some we have OZuna and Duval who make our lineup just like Shurser said just long, right? And now you have a contract question around

quick. I mean, he has been. Well, I'm trying to see he's signed through 2020. Yeah. This is on a one year deal. 3.25. So is there no day one year. We have a team option for next year on him. I guess the thing with, with Duval is you have. Pache and waters and Duval will be 32 next year. You're surely not going to have Duval and

OZuna around when you have both of those guys potentially breaking through next year. I mean, maybe easier to retain Duval. Because OZuna. He's going to get a lot offered. Oh my God. He's in all the headlines around free agents for 2021. You know, he's he's up at the top of it. Yeah. And I mean, obviously he's going to make a lot more money. And deserve it.

I'm sure. Yes. He's he's done himself. Yes. A bunch of favors. Yes. Yes. There's no doubt. All right, guys. Next up is shot in the dark. But first a quick break. All right. Shot in the dark are crazy predictions for the games coming up this week. But let's see how we did last week. And let's start with our listener picks. We'll start with Jay Rice, who

predicted that the Braves would post three quality starts this week. Very close, Jay. Only two and not until Anderson start on Saturday and rights on Sunday. So thanks for playing Jay. Next up Braves fan 89 predicted the Braves would have four games this week. We're starting picture went five or more innings, which is maybe the craziest one of them all. So we're going to be able

to get a chance to play in the dark. Again, only two Anderson and right this weekend. Coach noon and predicted that Ian Anderson and Max Fried would combine for 18 innings and go three and O along with three doubles from Dan's B. So that was tough. Of course, with Max out. But Anderson only one one of his starts and Dan's B had only one double this

week. So thanks for playing coach. Next up, Chris Simpson predicted that Akuna would hit a homer off you, Urania. Get hit by a pitch in retaliation during the series. So Akuna was actually hitless that might, but still managed to get hit by Urania. Although it did not seem like it was on purpose. But I did love that one. My God, Nikuna Homer would have been so

great. And then last but not least Brian predicted that one of the prospects would pitch at least five innings and get a win. So Kyle Wright did pitch six innings. So that was one of the two things on Sunday. And I may be more happy for chip than Kyle because he got his first win today. And so did you, Brian. Hey. You get an ABT, so

It is. It is. Two weeks in a row. Man. Right. We're fired. Not not as not such good news for us. Oh, let's go back to the listeners.

Let's do that part again. All right. So I predicted the catchers would hit four more homers this week. Only one by Darnell. Ham, you predicted the braids would go five and two and outscore opponents by 15. So we did outscore the opposition by 17. Nailed it. Yeah. But the team only went four and three. Didn't nail it. Yeah. And Curtis, you predicted braids would get two

wins out of starters, not named Max or Ian. And of course, there was only one by Kyle right this Sunday. All right. So guys, let's see. We got this week. I will start. I predict that Tookie and right give up. No more than four combined earned runs across their two starts this week. Ham, what do you got? It's an Azi and Akunya junior special. I say

they they hit four homers and steal three bases between the two of them. All right. Curtis, how about you? Steve's going to let you track all that information down the table. I have that the braids are 50 plus runs this week. Yeah. Math all those all those would be good. Maybe but I mean, Kurt, will they do it in like two games? That's right. Yes. How

many games? Just to get the orgals. They can score those runs and three games. That's right. All right, folks. Remember, you get to play each week as well. So as we said, Tuky makes his return to the rotation on Monday. In the first game, he will face Jorge Lopez and his 638 ERA and 133 Whip. No starters announced for either team on Tuesday. Wednesday, Hamels makes

his debut against Kegan Aiken and his 461 ERA and 139. On to the Metz where on Friday, Max Fried returns from his stint on the I.L. He'll face Seth Lugo who's been plucked from the bullpen to plug some holes in the rotation. He has a 263 ERA and a 1-1 Whip. Saturday, Ian Anderson faces David Peterson and his 417 ERA and 1.3 Whip. And then closing

out the week, Kyle Wright faces Michael Waka, who has not worked out. So well for the Metz is here. Seven and a half ERA, 1.75 Whip. Guys, before we get to our predictions for the week, I can't think of as important a week in what the starting pitching can do for us. Then this week, I mean, what does Hamels look like and is freed? Look like

he's back to himself and there's right build on it. You know, I mean, like this week is massively important. It is. Oh my God. Yeah. And the offense and I'm not even counting toki. You know, that would just be. I'm an honestly, even if it looks great, I won't necessarily believe it. But almost and feed and write. You know, I mean, so I, you know, I.

point, it doesn't really matter. We've got a great bullpen and a great offense. That's that is the reason we will either win or lose. Yeah. Well, and if we can just add a middling. Starting with it may be the difference maker. Yeah, absolutely. All right. Ham six games this week. What's the record? So this is my second shot in the dark. I say we go six

and oh. Ham. I think we win every game. I think that would be six and oh. No, I know. But I think this just the offense is going to feed the pitching. And it's like you said, it's one of those weeks where. I think it's just going to feed off each other. I think toki's going to come back and look great. I think everyone has something

to prove this week. You know, it's a time to sort of if we can sort of take care of business this week. Maybe we can sort of coast into the postseason a little bit with our seating. I think we have a great week. I like it. All right. I will go four and two. I just think we go two and one, two and one. Curtis, how

about you? Yeah. I'm going to go five and one. I'm not sure which one we sweep out. Maybe Lynn towards Baltimore. But yeah, I'm going to go five and one. Yeah.
