Wegovy heart benefits due to more than weight loss -Novo Nordisk

Deanish Drug Maker Novo Nordisk says the heart protective benefits of its wildly popular wagovie obesity treatment are due to more than just weight loss. That's according to data it presented at the American Heart Association annual scientific meeting on Saturday and published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Novo had released early data in August, which showed wagovie reduced incidents of heart attack, stroke or death from

heart disease by 20%. It's been shown to help patients lose an average of 15% of their weight. Now the full results from the drug makers select trial are out and researchers say they show wagovie reduced the risk of a non-fatal heart attack by 28%. And heart-related death by 15% compared to a placebo. Novo said the cardiovascular benefits appeared before patients started losing weight, which could mean

heart protection was not purely due to a weight loss. One cardiologist told Reuters it's important to note the trial didn't study how wagovie could stop heart disease from happening. It only looked at how to stop it from getting worse. The study looked at overweight and obese patients who had pre-existing heart disease but not diabetes. The patient trial included over 17,600 patients and lasted nearly three years.

Though the trial was not conducted to test weight loss, participants lost an average of nearly 10% of their total body weight.
