Rescue ranch evacuates hundreds of animals after Ohio train derailment

We have goats, we have sheep, pigs. This is the Kindred Spirits Rescue Ranch, home to more than 200 animals. Earlier this month, Lisa Marie Sapko had to evacuate her animals fast. We had almost 80 large animals out and then we got about half of our birds out and then the rest of them we had to just enclose. Just four miles away, a train had derailed in

East Palisano, Ohio. Some of the cars contained toxic chemicals. Officials had concerns about a possible explosion and evacuated a one mile radius around the crash site to do a controlled burn. This released some of the toxic chemicals into the air. Subco didn't want to take any chances so she moved her animals to a nearby fairground. We did see the plume. The plume did come over. We

did have some eye burning and some skin irritation and things the day that we were evacuating. After a couple days, she and her animals went home. But she remains cautious. She said air monitor tests on her farm came back okay. Now we have some concerns about soil contamination and the water tables and the well water. But we're cautiously optimistic. In the weeks after the incident, people

were reported seeing dead fish and creeks. Officials advised those nearby to drink bottled water. Clean up crews are continuously driving in and out of the crash site. I definitely think we're going to see chemical issues, you know, health issues with chemicals over time, you know, for sure. I don't know if it'll be right away, but I think, you know, over the course of, you know, time,

you know, we'll see it. But hopefully, you know, the railroad will do the right thing. So.
