Today students and faculty will return to classes at Michigan State University exactly one week after a mass shooting left three students dead and five others hurt. National correspondent Mara Cereani is here with a look at the changes the school is making as the campus reopens. Hey Mara. Jay, and Lindsay Good morning. So this mass shooting of course traumatized the Michigan State community, the entire school community
there. And while some feel that it's just too soon to return to campus, university officials are hoping that coming back together will kind of help the students begin to heal from this horrible tragedy. So the university in Eastlancing is reopening to about 50,000 students this morning after that mass shooting last Monday evening. And I'm also very happy to be here with you my friend, Andrea Verner
and Ariel Anderson. And at least five others were injured following the tragedy. Parents from across the state and across the region arrived at the school to drive students home. As of this morning, a change dot org petition demanding hybrid or online learning options for the rest of the semester has already received nearly 24,000 signatures. The petitions organizer stating that campus is going to be able to
do that. And I'm going to say they do realize that some students, they realize these concerns and that some students may not be ready. Noting everyone heals at their own pace and officials say they're ready to have these open and difficult discussions about how to make students feel safe. We're going to go back into the classroom. We're going to space for students to talk. We're going
to tell them it's OK to not feel OK. And we're going to help them get to the support that they need. We're going to listen to them when they talk about the work that they need to do. And we're going to talk about what makes them feel safe here on campus. And we're going to use that information to make adjustments here. That will ensure that we
get back to normal here. And in a letter late Friday, the University's Interim Provost urging faculty to faculty to be flexible and how they run their classes. Test and assignments, Jay.
