Show #499: The Braves Fall in Game 7

Cap every game. His name rhymes with the leaf. Yes. The same brilliant mind. It was who started the show in the first place. So what are you going to do? What are you going

to do? You win some? You lose some? Yeah. Um, all right. So a little bit of news before the game starts and a bit of a surprise in that dust in May, who started Friday night's game and through 55 pitches Friday night is starting Sunday's game. So, you know, it seems that the plan here is get dust in May through, you know, the top three or

four in the order and then bring in, um, Gonsoline so that he can have more length. I mean, really like an opener, you know, really the raised style opener. And he did that. Didn't may do that in. Yeah. I guess the Padres and Urias was the guy who went long in that game. So didn't quite go that way for. He was a little amped up. He

was. Yeah. So Akunio walks on four straight and then steals. Freddie walks on four straight. We are at eight straight balls now. The first strike of the game for dust in May does not come until the ninth pitch of the game. Um, but I was wondering, don't care about those strikes because he singles Akunio scores. Um, quick note on kind of a Bush league play by

Will Smith, Black and the plate like he did. 100% you know. And I was a little word that Ozzy was hurt. Honestly. You made rock. Sorry, Akunio. Um, and then Darno double play. One of the one of the standout moments of the game. Mm. If you didn't like that double play, Kurt, I've got another one for you. The other, the two, the second on the third

standout place of the game. Um, and then Ozzy strikes out and the top of the first is over. So in Anderson, you know, we, we pleaded. I thought that we were pretty clear about it to just have a one, two, three inning at the top of the first and no runs. We did get half of it. So Mookie singles. Um, see, we're going to be able

to get the first. We got out at first after Freddie bobbles what really could have been a double play and barely gets it to Anderson. Barely. In fact, I was, I wasn't convinced in real time that they got him and they did. I mean, the replay shows that they did. But that could have been a free disaster. Um, so right. So Mookie's at second. Um, and

now Turner flies out and also a weird play there. Like, you know, it's clearly Pashay's. Ball and Akuno almost runs into him. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. I mean, nothing else to make of that other than weird moment in the game. Uh, and then Muncie strikes out huge strike out. Only 21 pitches. My God, we haven't had a 21 pitch first inning in days.

Um, so time. We're up. And we're up. We have a lead. It is one nothing. It is top of the second. And as we thought, gauntlet's in. And Dan's be hit a tight, tannic home run. Second deck shot. Just massive. You know, so I have been really diligent about, because I have the at bat app to just put my phone down because particularly when the Dodgers

are up, like really diligently when the Dodgers up, because I hate to see something bad happen on my phone before I see it on the TV. I don't know if you got that as well. Yeah. Yeah. But I have, but again, I'm a little Lucy. I'm a little looser about it when the braves are up. And I happen to, I happen to get that dance be

alert. And I was like, Oh, God. So good. And then I get to see it on TV. So then Riley flies out. Um, Markeka strikes out really a perfect pitch from Gauntz and I'm a guy's a member, low and away. Uh, Pashay walk and Akuno gets under a ball and flies out for I lost count. 750th third time. The series. Yeah. Something like that. Yeah. He

wore out the lazy fly balls to the outfielders. Yeah. But it is too zip headed to the bottom of the second. So Will Smith flies out, Belinger flies out. Pollock single, Peterson single. It's first and third. Uh, Darnell loses the ball. Right. It was, I think it was, it was, they, they had called it a wild pitch. But I really think it was more like a,

a pass ball. So Peterson to second. So we don't have the, uh, the force. And then Taylor strikes out another massive like runners on heart pumping. Uh, you know, and to the inning, um, Anderson's at 47 pitches. And yeah, I mean, I am, I am like deep into red face. Oh my God. Head is, my head is pounding. My chest is pounding. Like it is insane.

I was so wrong out in the second inning. I think there is no way this game is going nine innings at this pace. I will not survive. Yeah. Totally. Well, we'll get to it. So top three curtain watch again. Yeah. Yeah. Kurt, I'm sorry. How this is going to go. Yeah. Oh, it's no seed. Don't give it away. It's awesome. So far. Yeah. So yeah, man.

Yes. Exactly. Just you wait. One second. So top three Freddy flies out. Azuna flies out. It's at hard. Really both of those balls are hit hard. Darno lazy fly. God. Darno just nothing. The sea, the series. Yeah. Just nothing. Uh, Gonson to 27 pitches going one, two, three. Uh, top of the third. So bottom of the third. If you thought the bottom of the second was

stressful. Um, so Mookie flies out. Seeker, easy ground ball, like a great start to the inning. Four pitches. Four pitches for those first two outs. And then Turner walks. Muncie doubles. It is second and third. Um, so, Will Smith hits a single. It is due to, uh, the, the, I was so curious. I was just rewatching that after, you know, right up the replays of that.

And why they had such a shift on in that situation. I mean, he basically hit it right toward where Ozzy almost always plays, which is, you know, about eight feet off of second base to the first base side. And, and for whatever reasoning in that. And I mean, the Braves don't shift a lot. I think that they're one of the least frequent shifters of any team

in Major League baseball. And for Ozzy to be on the other side, to be on the third base side of second at that time. It's just, you know, I mean, gotta be a spray chart thing, right, Kurt? Yeah. I'm sure obviously. I mean, it's, yeah, but it's just like it was just so unfortunate that any other time. That's just the easiest. And how many freaking two

out runs to the Dodger score in the series? I mean, it seemed like every. Two out runs. Yeah. And the walks, the walks just. Punished the Braves seemingly every single time. Not early in the series, but late in the series. Yeah. Last three games will call them. Yeah. So it's two two. Will Smith is on first, Belinger walks. It's first and second. Pollock flies out. God

bless, Pollock. My God, if Pollock wasn't in the lineup, he would have been a much rougher series. So he stayed in the whole time. He didn't get replaced at all. Pollock. I think he did. I think he did. Yeah, I didn't, when they brought in Kiki Hernandez, they moved Taylor out to. Yeah. Left. I think. That was, that was sort of a Kiki Hernandez joke. I

was thinking that he had come in and replaced Pollock. We're, I was still playing the game as if I don't know what happened in the game. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah. Trying to add some levity to this really. Yeah. Show. Hey. So Anderson, you know, I mean, we don't know yet, but it seems pretty clear. That Anderson is done. So 73 pitches for Anderson,

43 strikes, not super sharp. I mean, not super sharp and not helped by the horrendous home played ump, who was not only bad and didn't give the top of the zone and didn't give the bottom of the zone, except for when he would give the top of the zone and the bottom of the zone. And you didn't know when. And it was, I mean, he was

just dreadful. So. Yes. 10,000% in. Oh, yeah. I mean, I was just like, you know, I was wondering which guy was going to be competent behind the plate. And I think, I think last night, maybe the guy was, and there's no stats to back this up. Why would there be? It's Atlanta baseball talk, but like, it felt like last night, the guy, the guy was the

most competent. But other than that. No, since changing now. Yeah. Herendus. Herendus. I actually thought that I mean, better. I thought the first two guys were better. I don't think so. I think the last five. I thought it was pretty much a high percentage of being atrocious. I mean, Kirk, but when you say that, it makes sense to me because like. Freed and Anderson live at

the top and the bottom of the zone. Yeah. I know. And I think they were getting more calls in the first two years. Well, and I think they were hitting their spots more. I mean, Anderson was was not close. I mean, he, he really labored. And so, you know, there was going back to the first inning with May. There was a, there was a borderline pitch

that he, that the umpire rightly called a ball. But, you know, I was talking to my son who I was watching the game with. And, you know, it was like, thank God, he didn't bail may out there. Because, you know, sometimes umpires. It's like, they don't want to see a guy out there throwing a bunch of balls. So they sometimes give some borderline calls to bail

guys out. And I hate that. Because if you're not throwing strikes, you don't deserve to get a borderline call. And that was like the eighth ball in a row that may have thrown. So, you know, who knows if he gets that strike called that if he doesn't change, it doesn't change. I mean, obviously he didn't last long in the game. But, you know, like total reset

on his frame of mind. And all of a sudden he starts throwing strikes. Which Anderson just, I mean, you know, that some of the never found it. Yeah. So, uh, I guess we have to talk about the top of the fourth now since the bottom of the third's over. Okay. So top of the fourth starts very, very, um, what's the word? Uh, positively, uh, encouragingly. Good.

Yeah, good. Good. Ozzy walks, Ozzy steals. Dance be walks. Um, ball forwarded. Dance was a strike, by the way. But, you know, the umpire did give it to both sides. Rylee dumps a single into center. It is three two. Finally, which he clearly was. Because he shortened up the swing a lot. Yeah. Uh, so it is still no out. And it's first and second. Gonson is

pulled, trying in his end. So during, so cakes is not. Now, during cakes is a B, there's a pass ball and runners go to second and third, which is great guys. Because now cakes won't hit into a double play. Oh, that's true. I mean, I was screaming just strike out. I was screaming just strike out right now. Just throw your bat. Cakes has already done the

minimum job we need from him. And his at bat isn't even over. Right. It says if he sacrificed. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Just, just sit on the deck. Just sit there. Do not. You're not. Lift the bat off your shoulder. Yeah. So cakes grounds to third. Dance be for some reason runs on contact. He is in a run down. That takes a while. But they finally tag

him. Rylee does a ton of hesitating. I mean, like there was one of the replays where, you know, it was kind of from the point of view from behind the catcher where you where Dan's be getting tagged out. And like Rylee is still not even in the freaking frame. So then Rylee goes and Turner very heads up throws to third and Rylee is out. And all

the sudden, the very, very positive top four, there's now two outs and cakes is at first. With two outs. And and Peshay grounds out. And the ending is over, which is exactly the swap we wanted to make. Second and third with no outs. And then Markeke's on first with two outs. Yeah. Just don't. Oh, Markeke's. Well, I don't know. I don't know what dance we was

thinking. I mean, it was, I, but just yet, no, it was all on dance. But just, but at that point, like it's, Markeke says done what he's going to do. Just like no, weak grounders. Just don't stride. I mean, it was just, uh, and I, I hate to say and be this guy. But, you know, if the way this turned out, you know, I mean, we

would have had second and third with one ounce, right, which is what shape in. I mean, right. Pasha grounds out. So then you've got second and third with two outs and based on Acunius recent efforts. He would have weekly flight out to right field. And we probably wouldn't have scored anyway. Yeah. That ending was going so well, Curtis. I understand. I understand. I understand. Okay. So

bottom of the fourth, Matt sick is in. And he's not sharp. No. Peterson flies out. Taylor singles. Mookie walks on a borderline call. But okay. Seager flies out to Acunia. No advance. You know, I don't have the box score up. If one of you guys would see. He's got a fielder's choice or something. Yeah. Cause he, there was at one point I felt like he was

on base. No. It's over five. All right. You're right. Huge out there. Um, with first and second, only one out. So now it's two out. Uh, pass ball. It's now second and third. Um, turners up. He's three and oh, huge swing on three and oh, gets into three and two. Then he walks him. The case is loaded. I'm dying in the living room case before wondering

how I'm doing this. And then a massive strike out of Muncie like Unreal, Magic screams afterward another tight rope escape. And the braids are still leading. Um, you comfortable with any relievers coming in this game. I mean, obviously not pinning this solity in Anderson, but his whatever he went to innings, three innings, three innings, and then handing that over. I mean, I sort of felt this

whole time that three runs was not going to get it done. Nor was three hits. And um, which noted also rarely single was the last braids hit of the game. Uh, I mean, did you, were you guys comfortable? Are they all seemed like they were gasped? They all seemed like they were tired and worn out. And I'm not suggesting that they weren't, but it just seemed

like every guy that the Dodgers are bringing in was still pumping at 100 miles an hour. And every guy that the braids brought in seems really shaky. Well, I mean, I agree. And if, if the, if you know, the first couple relievers like had some one, two, three's that we did not have a one, two, three of the whole game. Right. Yeah. Um, yeah. So they

were so much sharper than us. I mean, that's, it just you really started to feel it down the stretch with, with Urius in there and just like, you know, I mean, he could have gone two or three more innings, right. And we were just gasped. Like, if we've gotten, if we'd gotten to the ninth, sorry, I, I know we, I'm not spoil it. Like, I mean,

where do you go? I guess we're seeing web or Dayton. I mean, the wheels were falling off. Yeah. We were, we were, we were out of gas. And, and the Dodgers truly, I mean, you know, look, small, God, small, I, I texted you guys. We turned off the sound at like middle of the sixth. And it was so much better. Um, I guess I mean, I

get that he's trying not to come off as a Homer, but my God. I mean, I don't think that's it. I really don't. I just just it doesn't explain all of it. It was just like egregious negativity that was coming out of him. You know, I mean, every single player for the braves, he was just dumping all over. I know. Um, and, and look, you know,

he every, every game a couple of times, we talk about how the Dodgers don't expand the strike zone and good eight A Bs. And the Dodgers, you know, tip our calves really had amazing at that. The most of the game. I mean, seriously, just terrific. They never swung when they did. They were fouling off pitches, extending A Bs. I mean, it was really a tremendous game

by the Dodgers hitters. They had a thousand two strike hits. They just like would get to one, it felt like they would get to one and two. Um, and then fell off three pitches. Yeah. Yeah. If foul off three pitches, get two and two, foul another three and two, and then either walk or get a hit. I mean, they're, they were tough to get out. Yeah.

So top five, it's still Trinon, Akunya flies out, of course. Watch it. Mm hmm. And it's just, I mean, you could see as the ball started to come down, that Mookie had it totally tracked and totally timed. And we were just f'd. Yeah. And it's just, you know, they make this like, Mookie, oh my God, Mookie, this amazing. That ball is like two, three feet further.

It's gone. I mean, just like, it's just in the, you know, I mean, obviously he had the time to track it up, but like, uh, not great, not helped. Yeah. Braves turning point number three. Yeah. So was in a week fly out at the, that inning took about 90 seconds. And we're back to, um, we're back to the top, not being able to breathe again. Yeah.

Exactly. So Shane Greenin, uh, Will Smith strikes out, uh, Belinger walks terrible mist second strike by the um, I mean, it was right down the middle. Um, insane, insane, that, that missed call, like just, and so, do they, what do they do? Do they go back and, does that box mean anything? Do they go back and like, oh, haha. Yeah, yeah. That, that, that's what they

give the umpires. There's their scores from the umpires are scored every game and lose gigs and stuff like that. If they're bad, but don't, but I mean, fired, of course, because, yeah, of course, because they can't fire these guys. But yeah, I want that guy making that call on every Markeka set bat because he would have walked every single time. Right. Um, and then Green induces

an enormous double play from Pollock. I mean, like, felt like game saving at that point. And felt like the only double play we induced from the Dodgers this entire. Yeah, I mean, you know, it's an exaggeration. There were one or two others, but boy, there weren't many. Yeah. Um, so top six, we're still leading. It is three, two graderals in. Darno, weak ground ball back to

the pitcher. Four pitch walk to Ozzy. Dan's B strikes out chasing a ball that's up and out of the zone. And then Riley strikes out. So nothing doing. And another fast inning. Bottom six mentors in and Kiki Hernandez. Um, it's a homer. And it was an amazing at bat. kept fouling off pitches. I think it was pitch number eight. Um, just a tremendous at bat by

the way. And I mean, if that, if that was a brave it would have been one of my favorite bats that I'd ever witnessed. I mean, it was just heroic that he was fighting off those pitches. It just sucks that he doesn't play for us. Yeah. Um, yep. And then it seemed to take the wind out of Mentor sales. This mentor had it there. I mean,

he was throwing, as you guys just said, fierce pitches. And then. Also, he didn't. I mean, he got out of the inning, I guess, but he did not look sharp. Well, then right. So then Taylor doubles. He gets Mookie to fly out. Taylor goes to third. Mentor stays into face. Seager. Because of the lefty, lefty matchup. Although I was still a little surprised, but Seager grounds

out to Ozzy. And the ball takes a, you know, a fantastically lucky bounce off the pitcher's mound. So Ozzy is fielding it up in the air throws a strike to, uh, to Darnow and T Taylor's thrown out at the plate. And this feels like, okay, this is kind of a turning point. Some luck goes, you know, the double play before in the fifth inning. And now

that we keep the game tied. Chris Martin comes in turn or flies out on six pitches. And, you know, we are still tied. I mean, I'm like, God, please, you know, maybe we can just keep trotting these guys out. And they'll walk the tight rope. And, uh, you know, we're on into one. Hold on. Well, and there's the field of choice we're Seager got on. So

you were right. Right. Yeah. There you go. So, uh, top seven, Urias comes in. I mean, it's like, it's like, um, you know, watching a football game and you want your defense to get some rest and your offense keeps going out and doing three in outs. You know, it's like, my God, give us something. Give us something because their gas, the pitchers are gas. They need

to take a breath. You know, they're working. It's just high leverage stuff. And they're getting to sit down for 47 seconds. And think about us poor people at home too. It's true. You can really, the only break was when the braves were batting. I mean, with a lead like it was, you know, you could breathe for a second. Nothing bad was going to happen. Well, you

know, and then, unless the double play in the fourth counts. Um, all right. So bottom of the seventh Martin is still in. And he strikes out Muncie and he strikes out Will Smith. And he looks untouchable. I mean, like, and the Will Smith strike out was this beautiful pitch on the black looking. I mean, I was like, we're going to get our one, two, three here.

We are finally going to. Yes. And then a long, and it's another one of these Fats. A long A B. Sorry, Belinger's up. Long A B. Failing off pitches, fouling off pitches. And then Martin gets too much of the plate and Belinger of all people. It's a home run. I mean, Belinger has been terrible. And they never went up and into him. I don't understand. You

know, it was the out pitch. The first four games of the series. And so now it's four, three Pollock strikes out. And, um, and it feels really bad. It does not feel good, him. You are right. Uh, so top eight. You reus is still in. Freddie lines out to center. And then is shown limping and clearly in pain and heading down the tunnel with the trainer,

which seems a bit like on the nose. For how things are going, although Freddie does return to the game. Like, I don't know. I, you know, I asked the question on Twitter. And someone, I really was staying off Twitter at this point. I think someone said that something about a foul ball before that, you know, his line drive. Did you guys see anything? I just didn't

remember. I saw, um, they showed a shot of snicker in the dugout. And somebody came up and like said something to him. Right. And Freddie had gone down the tunnel. Like, yeah, he looked. And he looked and it didn't look good. But then on the sudden we saw Freddie sitting on the bench in the dugout. Yeah. Yeah. So, Ozone line drive to Muncie at first and

then Darnau, another week ground out to Muncie. And we are down to three outs. So we need to hold him here. And Melanson comes in. Uh, gets a key key to fly out, tailor to fly out. Again, we're going to at least have our first one, two, three, but Mookie doubles. Snicker goes to the mound and they talk for a minute and then we cut to

friggin commercial. So we don't really seem to how Melanson convinces Snicker to stay in the game. But Melanson convinces Snicker to stay in the game and face Seeger and Seeger grounds out to end the eighth. And top nine, you reiss is still in. He's a 29 pitches and unlike, okay, you keep the lefty in. You turn Aussie around. Now he's batting from the right side. And

this is power side. Yeah. This is going to fight Dave Roberts. Like this is a moment. It was not one. Actually, it turns out. It was the moment he grounded out to the shore. He grounded out. That's true. And it was also the moment that Dan's be then grounded out. And then on the first pitch, he sees Riley flies out and Riley is our last batter.

2020 season. And then the last thing that happened was I turned the TV off as fast as possible. So it's not any of the Dodger celebration. I didn't even I assume Belinger caught it. Yeah, I didn't even I I too didn't even wait for that moment to happen. All right, guys, let's come back with final thoughts and not much else because there's not another game. So

we'll be right back after this quick break. Okay, so the braves postseason run is over. You know, and look, we were texting today. And I really felt good and calm heading into it. And honestly felt and still do that like it was an amazing run. And you know, the Dodgers were just a little bit better than us. And it showed in. Winning four games to three

and it showed in winning game seven four to three. You know, the Dodgers played better over the seven games. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, they went four and one. Yeah. The fact that well, go ahead. No, no, go ahead. Well, I mean, they were built for that. That's where the seven game series really plays out. Right. They're money and their depth. And just how. Good their lineup

is one through nine. It bore out. And they were, but they were just a bit better than we were. And we knew that the, the lunacy of seven games in a row that was weighted toward the Dodgers. Who? I mean, the braves did not get a chance to rest anyone. I mean, obviously, the Dodgers didn't either, but their depth is is greater than ours. And I

mean, when the sort of soft underbelly of our bullpen had to be exposed, it got exposed. But yeah, what's interesting when you say that, Kurt, is our bench, right? I mean, the only, this is probably wrong. But other than Camargo, did anybody have any pinch hits? Flowers never saw the. No, Culbertson did Panda Panda had a pinch hit right in game six. At the end of

the game. Culbertson did not get an A B, right? I don't think so. I mean, he came in that that that blowout. That game three, but I don't know that he ever had. Yeah, no, no, actually, you went two for two. But, but you know, the, the, you know, the point stands that in like critical moments. When the Dodgers were bringing in Keke, you know, um,

all we had was Camargo. Yeah, I mean, they had jock Peterson, Keke Hernandez. I mean, Austin Barnes. They, they, yeah, they're benchers better than ours. I'm not going to use the word. Well, I, you know, honestly, I, I, I tried to not let myself, um, just from recent and lifelong history, supporting teams, like move to the next phase ever, you know, um, I did in the

Super Bowl. When we were up 28 to 3, I, in my mind, was like, my God, we're going to win the Super Bowl. And I will say that despite my sort of gloomy outlook on a lot of things, I did after we beat them in game four. And beat them soundly in game four and Bryce Wilson was brilliant. And we finally beat Kershaw. I did sort

of allow myself for a minute to envision us going into the World Series. Um, and, you know, their credit, I guess, is the word they did not allow that game to be the deciding factor in all of this. And the Braves, you know, the Braves had really played such great baseball and so many facets throughout this postseason in the last three games. Going back to those

in as bad tag, you know, I mean, it just sort of all the middle errors that could be made were made by the Braves. Yeah. And the Dodgers didn't make many if any. You know, I mean, I'm trying to think back over the, over the series. And, um, yeah, not a lot. Although games one, two and three seemed like three weeks ago. Sure. Yeah. Um, you

know, I'm not going to say that I'm not going to be able to do that. No, look, I am not, I am not gutted by it. No, you know, I'm not gutted by this because we made it to game seven of the NLCS. This is not a, you know, it was not some horrendous gutting wild card game or not getting out of the first round or,

you know, all that stuff. And, and nobody gave the Braves any chance in the series. And, you know, if this Dodgers team is supposed to be historically amazing. I mean, they escaped by the skin of the their teeth and they're going to be so worn out from just grinding this series out, you know, I mean, it's amazing what the Braves did. Yeah. I mean, we over

delivered on expectations. Like we blew the ceiling on expectations. And especially, I mean, even if our team had been at full strength, the Dodgers were still supposed to dominate us, right? Every team, they were supposed to blaze through the National League and then COVID hit. Right. So they're going to be able to do that. And everything I turned upside down, the season became very hard and

arduous to, to get through. And then all of our pitching, I mean, with one starting pitcher that we fought you walked into the season with actually make a postseason start. And we overcame that and we had a puncture's chance in game seven. I mean, we it's, it's amazing. This guy's worked so hard. And it's just, we just didn't quite do it. And the end you know,

it did come down to some amazing plays by them. I mean, they made clutch plays, Mookie made three clutch plays and three games in a row. And the ball just didn't bounce our way. But we're set up for, you know, some Dodgers Braves and LCS's down the road. Yeah, I would sell you no doubt about it. So guys, any, any closing thoughts for tonight anyway, I

know what you're going to do. We'll have more closing thoughts, but any closing thoughts for tonight before we wrap this up. Okay, the future is bright. The future is bright.
