Show #496: The Braves Lose To The Dodgers (Badly)

this one again, the rest of the postseason. So, so neutral. Well, look, people go, people listen to old shows all the time, especially this like, you know, game by game stuff. Are you kidding? I want folks to, you know, I want to keep people on the edge. Exactly. Exactly. Don't spoil it. So folks, because there's nothing else to talk about, we'll talk about game three of

the NLCS against the Dodgers. We will break it down, but first a quick break. So first, um, yeah, yeah. Well, so we should, you know, we should admit that we are recording this while the game is still going on. The first ending is still going on. Yeah. That's right. Fulties first and he has still the cardinals are still he, the cardinals came back because we didn't,

we suspended that game. You know, it's funny. I, and I'm sure it's sort of more local trending and not, you know, national trending, but when I go to Twitter, when I went to Twitter, a couple hours ago, it showed Fultie trending. And it was a lot of people going, you know, Fulties like, whoo, why only me and, you know, all whatever. And I was like, oh,

I feel bad for Fultie that like he's got to get dragged into this. But he now, in the history books no longer holds the record for worst inning ever surrendered. That is true. In a postseason, he's, that's he can sleep well, battered tonight, knowing he's number two. But we keep it in the family. And that's the important things. Exactly. We push ourselves. Which is going to

be awesome when the Falcons have a 29 to three lead in their next Super Bowl and blow it. That will be a long, long time. You think that can happen when anybody can still remember the Super Bowl. Amazing that it's both first innings to these two records. Like what in the ever loving? Amazing is an interesting word choice. But yes. Yeah, it is that plus other

things. Also, amazing. It's like four hours in and this game is in this seventh. Well, not that amazing for, think back to the first inning. Yes. Did you guys see him rights, ERA through point through two thirds of it? And his postseason ERA now. No, what is it? 94.5. Yeah, that's tough. Yeah. Dayton sims 36. So nice for both of them. We had just gotten the

first one. Someone had just tweeted us asking, where's green? And Shane Green did just enter the game with two outs in the eighth. There he is. There he is. But we'll get there. Okay. So look to avoid talking about the game for just a few minutes longer. A little news before today's game. So Bryce Wilson was announced as the game for starter. The Dodgers announced that

if his trajectory continues that Kershaw will start game for. And as we discussed in last night's show, it played out that way. So it left you. Reis on the mound for tonight's game three. Markeke sat. Riley moved to left. Camargo in it. Third. As it turned out, not to spoil anything, but we would see other bench guys. And what an offensive explosion. Yes. Fortunately, defense didn't

matter at all. We could have bit any order and it would not have. Which is great because Riley did not shine out. There and left on one play. And look, you know, I mean, he's a third basement and all. But he was skating. That was that was a little grim. Okay. So also we're not going to walk through every batter. Come on. Thank God. But let's

talk about the top of the first. So first pitch of the game. Mookie hits a ground ball. Great play by Johan that takes him, you know, he takes his momentum into foul territory throws. Not a perfect throw, but Freddie stretches catches it keeps his foot on the bag has to sort of extend out into foul territory. So it's not to get run over. And Mookie is

called out. And I am like amazing play. What a tremendous start for Kyle Wright. This is awesome. And then they review it and and Mookie beat it. I mean, it was by a. Oh, fifth of a step, but he beat it. So Mookie is safe. And then that. And yeah, that's right there. I mean, sorry, unless you're about to go to see her, but we we

get that play last night, where it does go in our favor, right? In the first sitting and we talked about you can't really have a game. Doesn't change on a play in the first, but that was such a sign of this is not the brave's night, you know, and it just a little sense of foreboding of the movement. Mookie hasn't gotten on all night. Now he's

here. That play didn't go our way. It may be nervous. It would have been nice to see how that inning played out of Mookie was out. And on one pitch, we had one out. Not sure that it would have made a difference. Honestly. So 13 to nothing. Right. Maybe we wouldn't beat the record. Maybe it wouldn't have been a record beating any. Good point. Yeah. So,

and I think it's the next pitch, right? It's either. Seagrard's first pitch or second pitch first pitch. He hits a double. Riley falls down. That was the really grim. Yes. He's a defense from Riley. I mean, like he took such a he got turned around and his route to the ball was bad. That's another one. And so what question is, you know, is there an argument

to take the outs from Marquayka? And have better defense tomorrow night. Right. I mean, Riley is not good. Right. So those are two outs that could have played or two, two at bats that could have played out differently. Right. Marquayka's maybe catches that ball. What about a swap and have Camargo play left? Yeah. Why not? He's played. I don't understand why they don't. I mean, he

made that amazing over the shoulder where he ran 120 feet to track that ball down later in the game. Terrific. Yeah. And he's got a cannon for an arm. I mean, he's not that. Riley's not athletic. But you got to figure Camargo is more athletic than than Riley is. And maybe just give that. I mean, as brilliant too as Riley has been as a third baseman.

Yeah. Maybe. He's been out there. I mean, I feel like I remember. He has. Yeah. Not a lot. He's not a lot. Last year, year before I forget. Yeah. I mean, that's the thing. I think that Riley has more recent outfield experience. It's not that recent. But more recent outfield experience than Camargo. So that's a double. It's one. Oh, he gets an out. Turner grounds out.

Muncie grounds out. It is two outs. Only one zip. But then he really starts. Well, there's a couple things. He leaves balls over the plate. I mean, look, Carl Wright was not good tonight. Carl Wright was not good tonight. I could say it 10 more times. He was not. He also was not getting the high strike of the low strike. Which killed him. That's why he

was leaving strikes over. Which killed. Not getting the high strike call. Like is that's how I mean, especially against guys like Belinger and some of those bats. That's how you get those guys out. And he had, you know, I guess he felt like he had to come down with it, which is just right in their sweet spot. I mean, he just got pulverized. Over eyes that

will smith double that was kind of in no man's land. Passages couldn't get there. It's a tough play. Belinger walk Peterson Homer, Rios Homer, Taylor walk. And that's the night for Kyle Wright. You know, two thirds of an inning. Five hits seven earned two walks. No strikeouts to homers. Yeah, I mean, it was, it was the absolute nightmare. Right from a. Yeah. Well, but I mean

more from a like from a score standpoint from a him standpoint, from a bullpen management, the rest of the way standpoint. Yeah, not great. Um, so from the Dodgers, carrying that momentum over. Right. Like all this talk about. No, we beat them. We shut them down. There's no momentum there. I didn't wake them up. Right. You know, and then just, I mean, they were all over

us. Yeah. And if we thought they liked Wright, they really liked Grant Dayton. Um, I won't go change a face of fastballs over the plate to hanging sliders. Yeah. It didn't really slide. How does that sweet big flat slider over the plate? Um, yeah. I mean, Dayton pitch two innings and had a worse line than Kyle Wright. I mean, other than the innings pitch, eight hits.

Eight earned two strikeouts, three homers, including a Grand Slam to Muncie. Uh, yeah. It was bad. I mean, you know, the other stuff. Right. So what I, what I do want to jump to is, um, it made sense for Grant Dayton to be the next guy out of the pen. Um, it seemed like a Noah was going to happen. Right. That you, you couldn't know what

I was going to do. There was a, um, no longer save him for game five, which I assume was the plan going into tonight that he was going to at least start game five. Um, and a Noah was terrific, you know, a Noah, shut them down. Um, which is no unfortunate that he cannot start game five. If that was this scenario. Yeah. Well, sure. Unfortunate for

game five really fortunate for tonight. Right. I mean, we're going to end up so we burned up. Grant Dayton, the last lefty on the, on the, you know, on the bench in the bullpen in Noah. We, you know, Shane Green pitches at least a third of an inning tonight. We'll see if he comes in the ninth. But so maybe it's Shane Green. Um, but you know,

we don't touch any of the, any of the high leverage guys. Um, it certainly, it certainly shines a spotlight on using Tomlin last night. Like as Tomlin would have been the first guy out of the pen tonight. And you could have also wasted Grant Dayton on this game too. And maybe, and maybe you don't have to touch a Noah. Yeah. Right. I mean, the way that

Kyle Wright pitched to start the season and, and the way the Dodgers are, um, a game like this was bound to happen. You know, I think a lot of us thought we were going to even lose game three. So, um, I don't know. I mean, it's unfortunate. But I, but I feel like it did. I don't feel like it really, really set us behind for the

games to come. I mean, we were still in the same position tomorrow that we were on game one, right, with no one really to start and needing the bullpen. But we've got them. And Bryce, Wilson could pitch like he did his last start of the season, right? I mean, maybe he gives us five good ones and we're back where we need to be. Yeah. I mean,

really the cost of this aside from a game in the loss column. But, and we've been tweeting it all night. The Braves were not going to sweep the series. Like we're going to lose a game. You know, this one is just more whatever psychically painful to the fan base. I don't think it's more painful for the players. Um, it just is what it is. And, and

small Wilson, Joe Buck got to just slabber all over the Dodgers more and more tonight. They were happy. But really, it's, it is just a loss. That's all it is. It's just a loss and, and in no, I mean, those are really the two things. Um, so you don't, you don't put any weight into the fact that the way the game ended yesterday had something to

do. Even psychologically for the Dodgers, that's something to do with today. I mean, obviously, Cal Wright was the contributing factor as was Grant Dayton. But don't you think that once their bats sort of woke up that their psyche was enhanced coming into this game, thinking, okay, we've, we've woken up. We found some offense after being completely shut down for most of a game and a half.

I mean, it has to be a contributing factor. I think I certainly, I think there is a little bit to that. But I also think it was more a matter of. They came off that game. They said tomorrow, tomorrow afternoon, whatever. Tonight, we need to go in and we're going to be swinging at first pitches, right? We're going to go out hunting for pitches in the

zone early. Um, because of its right, right? And it's not someone who's as accomplished as Anderson. Um, and we're going to just jump on him, right? And they were super, duper aggressive. Um, and so is it because they have this huge moment to maybe a little bit that they had the confidence to do it. I think they just had this game plan coming to into right

and it worked to a T. Yeah. I felt so Curtis. Yes. I think that they felt that they have momentum and were up for the game in a way that they clearly weren't up for game two. Um, but if they had faced Inoa out of the gate or, you know, just magically, it was Max Fried pitching or even Ian Anderson magically pitching, I don't think they

tee off. I don't think it was all momentum. I think that they got to right and he wasn't sharp and then he got rattled and it got worse and worse. You know, well, it's what is it? Momentum is tomorrow's starter. Right. Which luckily is Bryce Wilson. Yes. Yes. Momentum. And then question mark after that. So in Noa went four innings tonight, one hit, four walks, four

strikeouts. But I mean, no runs. No runs. I mean, just amazing. Right. I mean, that, that is the that's the blueprint. The that is the behave starting pictures. Um, you know, not name Max Fried. Uh, for the most part, right? Is is four or five innings and it's a little shaky, but no runs scored and we got that in the middle of the game. It was

of course too late. Um, so some other things, right. So some regulars got rest tonight. Um, flowers was the first guy in replaced our no panda replaced. Um, panda replaced Freddie, Colbert sin replaced Akuna. So some guys get a little rest for tomorrow as well. And these are, Alex, we got to cause these are positives. Yeah. And we get to see Alex Wood again. We thought

for sure there's no way he would ever see this series again. And he's back. Good for him. Yeah. Good. See if we've kept 14 runs off Alex Wood in us here. If it's going to be again, we have to restart the show you realize that's all right. But if it were, we'll just we'll just continue it as that ending goes on. Yeah. Exactly for the longest

show ever. Pitch by pitch. Um, I'm a little surprised we didn't get Colbert sin or panda pitching. Honestly, like, particularly after, you know, it was done. Yeah, I just not even touched Jacob Web, you know, the Fox broadcast said that we're going to be able to do that. Yeah. I mean, I think that's the reason why I think that that that. Uh, crannots was talking to

Charlie Colbert sin. Early on. Well, one more inning to go. A double switch could be in the works. Yeah, it could be. I get the feeling that just going to throw Shane green again. But I wouldn't like you got, you know, he got a little work. Um, saving for tomorrow. And let's throw one of the position players out there. My God. Um, all right. Guys, so

look, let's, uh, not too much more to talk about here. Right. It's an ugly one to swallow, but at the end of the day, it is still just one game. So, uh, let's come back, wrap this game up and talk about tomorrow after this quick break. All right. So it's Bryce Wilson against maybe Clayton Kershaw tomorrow. Don't really care who's starting for the Dodgers, honestly. Right.

Like if, you know, if when we don't give up 11 runs in the first inning, we can follow our blueprint of deal with the starting pitcher, figure it out, get to the middle of the game, get to the bullpen, and then do what we do. But there is that possibility of, of Bryce Wilson go in sideways tomorrow. Oh, yeah. I mean, Bryce Wilson really just has

a fastball. And the Dodgers certainly know that. And they'll be looking for it. But we could also get that Bryce Wilson. It wasn't his last start of the season. It was on the last day of the regular season. It was the start before that where he was just like a revelation painting, uh, you know, living on the inside to right hand at batters and living on

the bottom of the zone. I hate to say it, but it has been more reality this postseason than any other. It really depends on the home played up and what Bryce is going to get to. Well, the good news is there won't be this guy. They've all been bad though. I, it is. There's none of them have been as bad as this guy was. Yeah. There

was, I mean, there was another situation. I can't remember if it was Dayton pitching or if it was still calm, right? But, um, I think it was a seeker was struck out. I mean, there were two pitches that were in the strike zone that he called balls and he walked and then that ending continued. So, you know, you've got to, you can't squeeze a guy in

a situation like this. I mean, it's just bad. Yeah. And particularly our three starters in in Fried & Anderson and right, they live at the top and the bottom of the zone. You know, when they're not getting those calls, that is tough. Yep. So, so let's play out Bryce Wilson does not have a good start. Let's call it two innings tomorrow. Because God, hopefully is Tomlin

the next guy up. You know, we got a call. Cover two nights. Right. Are we talking it's like four or five runs like five zip. God, I mean, Tomlin just seems like a concession. Yeah, I told you. Five runs seems like it's it's obtainable. Although I'm looking at Kirschel's career splits against Atlanta, which are just. He runs. All you can move for with him is that.

And he's been better lately is that he can get Yippee in the postseason. Right. And he can. Throw a lot of pitches and walk a lot of people and just miss and not be sharp. And maybe. Maybe we get that tomorrow. Maybe his back spasms. Maybe he's going back a little bit too early. But he owns us. I mean, it is not a great. It is

not a great projection for us. Wilson against Kirschel tomorrow to be sure. I'm not. Yeah. I'm not 100% convinced we see Kirschel tomorrow. They're not really definitive about it for one. They're going to. Obviously, when this game, now I mean, they're still down to one. I get it. But do you wait? You know, if if if he's at 90% do you wait for him to pitch

game five? I can't imagine they're going to run the risk of going down three one. Yeah. With potentially freed and in Anderson coming back. Again, for those games. And is there any chance that particularly with how this played out and that we burned to know it and we really don't have anybody to start game five that they bring max back on short rest on four days

instead of five days. He is a guy who has needed rest. Right. It's not something on paper that I love. But I think it's got to be something that they're thinking about. Yeah. I mean, it's been done. There's precedent for it. Right. I don't think it's really took. I just feel like I remember the braves doing that in these. Some of these shorter division series or

something where they rush guys back on short rest and I just. I don't think it I don't know. I don't think that puts Max in a great situation. No, it does not put him in the best situation to succeed for sure. Yeah. But I don't know. But. The other option is. Top top. I mean, so the best so best case scenario from here on out is

Wilson is. Like that start that you talked about where he's getting the calls, painting the corner sort of dictating the pace. Yeah. And goes for five and keep it close. Right. And then and we went. Right. And so then a Tomlin start us up three one is much more palatable knowing than that we have freed an Anderson coming after that. But then if like we use

Tomlin, if we have to go to Tomlin or date, I mean, Dayton's burned for tomorrow. And Wilson. And goes to thirds of an inning. It's like, do we have a choice? Well, you start seeing, you know, you start seeing O day. For a couple of innings. Yeah. I mean, you know, I, is there any. I know that it's just a couple. Yeah. That's what I was

going to say. And I know. I've touched on this. And I forget who we spoke with that said that Matt said didn't want to start. But. That is a real. Option in game five is to bring Matt again. I know that he could go more than probably a couple of innings because he's not stretched out. But. If you're in a situation like that where you've got

to have somebody that can come in and hold another team down, he seems like your best option in that scenario. But a guy who has overcome so much and so much of that is comfort level for him to tell you. I'm not comfortable starting. I just I can't see them doing it. Yeah. You know, but but maybe he's the first guy out of the pen. Well,

you do, but the Dodgers did with May that game, right? You're just one inning. Just so he and then you go to. Matt's like for three innings, right? See if you get to the lineup. One to one and a two times. Potentially. And then you then you're sort of there, right? And you. With green and then Smith, Martin, mentor, right? I mean, you could really piece

together a pretty good stretch. Would you bring right back into a game? You know, you don't want to start him. I mean, I can't see them. I can't see them using him to start game five, particularly if it's two to. Because that'd be a terrible amount of pressure to put on him. Yes. And the Dodgers would be up again. First, right? And then you know, you

know, I'm going to be a little bit more careful. And then you know, I'm going to be a little more careful. Still, so it would just be like, right? That's right. Yeah, an exact repeat. So Shane Green is in for the ninth. So I don't understand that. Honestly. Yeah, I the. I guess I'm still just sort of befuddled by the way. And I think he's done

a great job. Snitker has so far this postseason, but pitching time on last night and then burning up, you know, a pit to pitch in this game today. Just don't make a lot of sense to me. Oh, I think he had to throw a Noah tonight today. I do. I mean, we can argue that. I mean, if he didn't throw a Noah, I mean, you can't

start throwing Colberson and Panda out in the fourth inning. I'm not suggesting that. Yeah, what I'm saying is that they shouldn't have pitched Tom on last night. Well, they could have pitched and green last night. They could have pitched. You know, last night, Jacob Web, Jacob Web, because that was the ninth inning. You're just trying to get through three outs. It's not like it's a long

relief situation. And to bring Tom on in that situation. And then come into the day. And obviously, he had no idea what was going to happen today. But there's always a chance with these guys with these young starters, because we've seen it. We've seen Cal write have this exact same scenario, act out. And that they would have needed a long reliever. I mean, obviously, Grand Aiden

was the guy today. But I think that's what I'm going to say. But still, he was terrible too. So they might have needed two of those guys. If, you know, right, can only go a couple of innings and just was a complete blow up. So it just it seems now. And I know that hindsight's 2020. It just seems like that those situations should have been reversed.

And you know, it looked great today. And if they could have started him in game five and he could have been terrible, you never know. But it just I question that decision on both of those fronts. Look, I agree. And I really question. Throwing green here again in the ninth. I mean, now you're effectively at least putting him in a worst position for tomorrow. You might

throw him tomorrow. I mean, he's a 13 pitches. Now he's got one out in the ninth. So let's say he's a 20 or 22. He can go again. But it seemed like unnecessary. Well, look, let's put this one behind us. Get some good innings out of Bryce Wilson tomorrow. And get this whole thing back on track. Can we talk about one more thing? Of course, yeah.

And maybe they just don't want to run the potential of a suspension. But don't you throw it just in turn or in this game? Yes. Particularly once grand. I mean, surely grand Dayton faced him. After after he kicked the ball. Again, writing went to innings. But yeah, or just bring a guy into the game. And get the suspension, whatever. Yeah. Yeah. And just throw it at

Justin Turner every time. He's just the worst. God, it despise Justin Turner. Maybe the same. Save our least favorite dodge or conversation for a little bit deeper into the series. You know, Kurt, it is, it is not Snickers way. You do run the risk of getting somebody suspended, which honestly, we can't afford to. In the in the postseason. Unless that guy is great. Isn't that why

you keep Luke Jackson around? Yeah. But I agree with it. And and gotless, gotless work by the umpire. To not to to award him the base. And not and not say that he, you know, did not try to get out of the way of the ball. I mean, it's just. I apologize because I was at my son's baseball practice again. Did you know what I mean?

Was that reviewed at all? I think it was reviewed because Snickers came out and talked to the umpire about it. I don't know for a fact. I mean, I was a little checked out at that point too. Yeah.
